Kargil district carved out of erstwhile district Ladakh came into existence in July 1979.It lies in the North-east Of Kashmir Valley at a distance of 205 Kms. from Srinagar with a geographical area of 14,036 Sq.Kms. The whole area is of high rocky mounatins which is devoid of any natural vegetation. The population of the district is above one lakh having density of 7 persons per Sq.Kms. against the average of 59 persons per Sq.Kms.at State level.99% of population is schedule tribe. The district has high altitude area in the Country ranging from 8,000 fts.to 18,000fts.above sea level. More

Places of Interest in Kargil: Kargil mainly serves as an ideal base station for adventure activities like trekking, mountaineering, camping, river rafting etc. In high Himalayan Valleys. It is also a base for taking shorter excursions to Mulbek where the chief attraction is a 9-m high rock sculpture depicting the future Buddha. More

How to Reach Kargil: The J&K SRTC operates regular buses (including deluxe coaches) between Srinagar and Leh/Kargil. Cars and Jeep taxis can be hired at Srinagar and Leh for Kargil. Local buses including mini coaches, for Mulbek leaves Kagil every morning and afternoon. Cars and Jeep taxis can be hired at Kargil for same day return trips. Srinagar is connected properly with rest ofg the country through Air and Road network.

Banks: The State bank of India (with money changing facility) and J&K bank have a branch each in Kargil.

Communication: Kargil has world wide direct dialing telephone facility, besides post and telegraph offices. In addition J&K Tourism operates its own wireless Radio phone network with field stations at Kargil, Padum and Leh which are connected with controlling stations at Srinagar, Delhi and Jammu. During the tourist season mobile wireless stations are also established in key places in the remote areas.
